Recommended by Legal 500 for her expertise in Family & Islamic Divorce matters, Aina Khan was invited as a guest of the Dutch Association for the Study of Islamic Law and Law of the Middle East (Association RIMO) to present a lecture at an annual international conference on ‘Proof of Marriage and Paternity in the Context of Migration’ at Leiden University in Amsterdam on 14th June.
Her lecture “Is my Marriage legal? Dilemmas facing migrant families” covered her work on religious and cultural clashes, her expert reports for court, her international networks of local lawyers and her ‘Register Our Marriage’ campaign on unregistered religious marriages.
Regarding her participation, Aina said: “I was pleased that the lecture was so well-received, with many astute questions afterwards. I also enjoyed learning fascinating details e.g. Eritrea is amongst the most unregulated countries, so one may not be surprised that they are not registering their marriages. What is shocking is that in 21st century UK, a parallel experience is increasingly taking place. The majority of religious marriages are not being registered – with the government ignoring the problems and the law stuck in 1949. My ‘Register Our Marriage’ campaign thus struck a cord with the audience, who could readily see the multiple risks and issues that can and do arise”.
The conference was attended by Academic specialists in private international, comparative and Islamic Law, Immigration Departments and civil servants as well as consultants, students and bloggers with an interest in international and Islamic law.
Aina Khan became a Consultant Solicitor in October 2012. She is on the Law Society’s specialist Children Panel & Family Panel.
