Catch Islamic Law specialist Aina Khan on Channel 4 documentary “The Truth About Muslim Marriage” tonight

Aina Khan, Islamic Law specialist, will feature in Channel 4 documentary “The Truth About Muslim Marriage” tonight, Tuesday 21st November, at 10pm. The documentary discusses the problems many British Muslim women face following a nikah wedding when trying to access legal rights, since the UK does not legally recognise these as marriages without having a civil ceremony alongside to formally register the marriage.

Aina has extensive knowledge on the topic of Sharia Law, with over 25 years’ experience specialising in Islamic Marriage and Divorce. Aina launched the campaign ‘Register our Marriage’ in 2014 which is designed to raise awareness of the legal issues experienced by so many British Muslim spouses as a result of the law. Through the campaign, Aina asks The Marriage Act 1949 to be amended to require all faiths to register their marriages in order to enable them access to fair legal protection and support in the UK.

Aina states:

“I have been filming this documentary over the past year. It was inspired by my ‘Register Our Marriage’ campaign, followed the nationwide Road Shows and featured former clients. I am delighted it has created awareness far and wide that a religious ceremony performed in England and Wales has to be registered legally for the couple to have rights. Don’t make yourself vulnerable without having a Prenup and legal marriage, or a ‘Living Together’ agreement’ if you do not want to marry.”

Aina Khan, Head of our Islamic & Asian Department has personally trained more than 50 lawyers to be familiar with Islamic and Asian legal issues. Our Family & Childcare teams across London and throughout the UK have been helping families to achieve their legal rights wherever possible. Islamic & Shariah Law Department specialises in Islamic Divorce, Islamic Financial Settlement & Mehr Claims under English Law. Legal 500 2016 edition applauds for niche expertise in this area.
